How to Get an Accident & Health Insurance License in North Carolina

North Carolina's Accident & Health or Sickness license lets you sell health, disability, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care products — a line of authority in steady demand as the state's population grows and ages. As of October 1, 2025, a prelicensing course is no longer required before the exam, but you must still pass the state Accident & Health exam through Pearson VUE. Here is how the process works.

The path to your NC health license

  1. Apply through NIPR at nipr.com, and complete the fingerprint background check. Allow up to 60 days for the state to process your application.
  2. Receive your authorization to test by email from Pearson VUE, including your National Producer Number (NPN).
  3. Pass the Accident & Health exam with a score of 70% or higher.

What the North Carolina Accident & Health exam covers

Like the other producer exams, the Accident & Health exam is delivered by Pearson VUE for the NC Department of Insurance: 55 scored questions plus unscored pretest items, 75 minutes, and a 70% passing standard. It combines a general section with a North Carolina state-law section. Core topics include:

  • Disability income and the main medical expense coverages
  • Medicare, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care insurance
  • Group versus individual health coverage and how each works
  • Policy provisions, exclusions, and renewability
  • Social Security disability, taxation of benefits, and North Carolina-specific regulations

Remember that Accident & Health is a separate license from Life, with its own exam. Many agents carry both; if that is your plan, you will prepare for and sit two exams.

What it costs

Expect to pay the Pearson VUE exam fee per attempt, plus the fingerprint background check. These amounts are set by the state and its vendors and are revised from time to time, so confirm the current figures in the free Pearson VUE North Carolina Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook before you book. Retakes require paying the exam fee again, so first-attempt preparation is the economical choice.

Preparing the smart way

The Accident & Health material is detail-heavy — Medicare rules and policy provisions trip up unprepared candidates. Our online video prep course follows the current North Carolina exam outline and lets you learn at your own pace: streaming video instruction, unlimited topic-based practice quizzes, and a full-length practice final. You can study around your job and family, 24 hours a day, and go into the exam confident on the material the state actually tests.

To sharpen the trouble spots, add our Insurance Class Assistance Program (ICAP): a sectional test bank organized by the specific sections of the North Carolina Accident & Health Examination Content Outline. You work through one section at a time rather than a single mixed quiz — ideal for the dense Medicare and policy-provision topics — so you reinforce precisely what the state exam will ask.

Frequently asked questions

Is a prelicensing course required for the health license?
Not anymore. North Carolina dropped the requirement on October 1, 2025. You may go straight to the exam, though a prep course is still highly recommended because the exam itself did not change.
Does one exam cover both Life and Health?
No. North Carolina licenses Life and Accident & Health separately, and each has its own exam. Passing one does not cover the other.
What's on the exam and what do I need to pass?
55 scored questions, 75 minutes, 70% to pass, split between general insurance concepts and North Carolina law.
